3. Stretched ideas. So many poems that children write are simply line after line of different ideas. An idea is thought of, written down in one line and then discarded rather than explored. If children take an idea and stretch it over three or four lines, it can be far more interesting. Show them how. For example, instead of: Grandad loves watching television He drives a blue car He likes to grow marrows ... Take each line and tell the reader more about the idea: Grandad loves watching television His favourite programme is The Weakest Link I think he fancies Anne Robinson...

Once they have described the place and the way it makes them feel, ask them to think very hard about something beautiful or amazing that transforms this horrid place. This should then be used in the last line of their written piece.
