Yet in all his voluminous works, he rarely distinguished between the global and the domestic. His main focus was on the dynamics of capitalism as an integrated social system, dominated above all by what he saw as the central dilemma for capitalists: an inexorable tendency for the rate of profit to decline. The essence of the problem, as he saw it, was a core "internal contradiction" of the capitalist mode of production - a tendency for the physical stock of capital to grow too fast. Driven by the pressures of competition, capitalists invested too much, leading to an excess of production (overproduction) for which there were too few buyers (underconsumption}.

A relatively small number of prestigious institutions and publishing venues have an outsized effect on what aspiring academics know they must do to land a good job, win research funding, or get on the program at major professional meetings.
