Indeed, one Head of Year 10 (Hillside Park) explicitly described the struggle to enforce a ‘middle-class way’: ‘you’re constantly reinforcing the middle-class way if you like, you know, I mean: “put your hand up” ’. As Reay (2004c: 435) explains, an individual’s habitus can be understood as constituting ‘a complex internalized core from which everyday experiences emanate’. It provides the framework for action, shaping what is considered im/possible and un/desirable. It is an amalgam of past and present, of the individual and their social location: ‘a person’s individual history is constitutive of habitus, but so also is the whole collective history of family and class that the individual is a member of’ (Reay, 2004c: 434).

For example, a discussion group of young women at Cowick School worried that their teachers judged their answers and ability in class differently because they did not express themselves in a valued linguistic style. As one of them put it: If there’s a class going on and teacher’s talking or whatever and you’re all answering a question and let’s say you’re saying it a sort of different way to someone else, the teacher could be like ‘yes you’re right, but no, no, you’re not quite there’. She’s sort of like thinking ‘okay well she said the same thing but the way she presented it was different’ and because of that you’re like ‘no, sorry you’re wrong’.

However, inevitably the study impacted on the destinations and aspirations of the participants. Due to the repeat interview format, they perhaps thought more about their aspirations than they would have otherwise. The repeat interviews also generated rapport between interviewers and students, with a few young people asking for advice or information both during and after the fieldwork period. In these circumstances, the research team provided appropriate information or support and encouraged the young person to take the issue further with a relevant service, such as Connexions.
