Similarly, when Hance says that he helped transport wealth to Flanders, it is never really clear whether he is speaking of the allegorical figure Wealth, or the real wealth that circulates unevenly throughout the world. Hance’s statements about wealth may be especially vexing to the allegorical figures because he talks about the complex reality of the circulation of wealth while the allegorical plot requires simple absolutes.
